New Voices of Nevada was formed to advocate for heightened free-press protections in colleges and schools, including retaliation protection for educators who advise student media.
Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro (D-Las Vegas) filed Senate Bill 420 on March 20, the deadline for legislative introductions. The bill has little detail and is considered a discussion vehicle that will be amended during the committee process. The legislation was referred to the Senate Education Committee. As introduced, the bill makes a press-freedom policy mandatory only at the K-12 level and makes it optional for the university system.
