New Voices of Rhode Island is a movement to guarantee student journalists in the state the freedom to report without fear of consequence. Right now, there is no added protection against administrative censorship for high school or college journalists and their advisers, leaving them vulnerable to censorship for simply reporting the truth.

HB 7677, the Student Journalists’ Freedom of Expression Act, by Rep. Jeremiah O’Grady, D-Lincoln, was filed on Feb. 24. The bill had its first committee hearing in the House Judiciary Committee on March 16 with no one testifying in opposition.
